Our Pit Stop Feature Story:
Top Speed

The fastest gas-powered production cars produced by American manufacturers rolled off the showroom floors packing quite a punch. Their impressive speeds and acceleration capabilities gave the manufacturer bragging rights and motivated other manufacturers to up their games. Here is a short list of some impressive machines produced by American engineering:

1957 Chevrolet Corvette: With its optional fuel-injected V8 engine, the '57 Corvette could accelerate from 0-60 mph in around 6 seconds, making it one of the fastest American cars of its decade.

  • Top Speed: ~132 mph

  • 0-60 mph: ~6.0 seconds

1966 Shelby Cobra 427: The Cobra is legendary, partially due to its incredible power-to-weight ratio. It could do 0-60 mph in just over 4 seconds.

  • Top Speed: ~165 mph

  • 0-60 mph: ~4.5 seconds

1970 Dodge Challenger R/T (426 Hemi): Equipped with the 426 Hemi engine, this muscle car was a formidable presence on the road.

  • Top Speed: ~155 mph (estimated)

  • 0-60 mph: ~5.8 seconds

1987 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway Twin-Turbo: An aftermarket upgrade by Callaway made this Corvette a beast with 345 hp and a top speed of over 175 mph.

  • Top Speed: ~177 mph

  • 0-60 mph: ~4.9 seconds

1992 Dodge Viper RT/10: With a top speed of 164 mph and a 0-60 mph time of about 4.6 seconds, the Viper made quite a statement with its power and style.

  • Top Speed: ~164 mph

  • 0-60 mph: ~4.6 seconds

2017 Ford GT: This decade brought a new Ford GT, capable of a top speed of 216 mph and a 0-60 mph time of around 3 seconds.

  • Top Speed: ~216 mph

  • 0-60 mph: ~3.0 seconds

2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye: With up to 797 horsepower, it could sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.

  • Top Speed: ~203 mph

  • 0-60 mph: ~3.4 seconds

It’s worth noting that the fastest street-legal car in existence is the 2,800HP BADD-GT. This beast, built from a 2006 Ford GT by Gas Monkey Garage in Dallas Texas, achieved a top speed of 310.8 mph at the Kennedy Space Center Landing Facility in Florida
