January - 1963 Corvette Sting Ray

cruisintimes

The 1963 split-window Sting Ray Corvette is one of the most sought-after classic cars in today’s market. In good condition with average specifications, this car can be expected to sell for around $95,000. The highest selling price of a 1963 Corvette at auction over the last three years was $935,000.

The 1963 Sting Ray was the brainchild of GM's design chief, Bill Mitchell, who drew inspiration from the mako shark, a sleek and fast ocean predator. This biomimicry influence is evident in the car's aggressive lines, long nose, and sharp styling cues.

Mitchell’s interest in marine life is also reflected in the “spine” that runs between the two glass panels in the rear window. This split window became the car's defining characteristic, setting it apart from all other Corvettes before or since.

The split-window design was controversial due to visibility issues and was only produced for one year, which drove up its interest with collectors. However, some owners modified their cars by replacing the split window with a single piece window from the 1964 model. As interest in the split-window model grew, there was a strong incentive to return modified cars to their original configuration.
